Ground Beef Tacos
Saucy, well-seasoned taco meat made with a quick homemade spice blend. Pile it into crunchy shells or warm tortillas and add your favorite toppings.
Ingredients
For the taco seasoning
- 1 tbsp chili powder, a mild American-style blend
- 1 ½ tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp fine salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp cayenne pepper, optional
For the taco meat
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ small onion, finely diced
- 1 lb ground beef, 450 g, 85% lean
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- ½ cup beef broth or water, 120 ml
To serve
- 8–10 taco shells or small tortillas
- 1 ½ cups shredded lettuce
- 1 large tomato, diced
- 1 cup Cheddar cheese, 100 g, grated
- ½ cup sour cream
Instructions
- Mix all the taco seasoning ingredients in a small bowl.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook for 3 minutes, until softened.
- Add the beef, press it into an even layer and cook without stirring for 2 to 3 minutes, until browned underneath. Break it up and cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, until no longer pink. Spoon off excess fat if needed.
- Stir in the seasoning and tomato paste and cook for 1 minute.
- Pour in the broth, bring to a simmer and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced and the meat is saucy but not wet. Taste and adjust the salt.
- Warm the taco shells or tortillas, fill with the meat and add your toppings.
Notes
- The seasoning blend equals about one packet of store-bought taco seasoning. Make a large batch and store it in a jar for up to 6 months.
Substitutions
- Beans: stretch the meat with one 15 oz (425 g) can of drained black or pinto beans, added with the broth.
- Spice level: leave out the cayenne for kids, or add a chopped chipotle in adobo for smoky heat.
Storage
- Refrigerate the cooked meat for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheat in a skillet with a splash of water.
